Welcome to the first post on this blog. The plan here is simple: I test AI tools in the real work of running a small business, and I tell you honestly what actually helps and what doesn’t. No hype, no affiliate pitches, just what I’ve experienced firsthand.

It felt right to start with the tool I’ve leaned on the most: Claude.

I didn’t set out to use one AI assistant for everything. It just kept turning out to be the right tool for the next thing on my list. Here’s what that actually looked like.

It read my code so I didn’t have to guess

When I was working on my own website, I had source code I needed a second set of eyes on. I’m not a full-time developer, and hiring someone just to review a few files felt like overkill. So, I handed the code to Claude and asked it to walk me through what everything did and flag anything that looked off.

It explained the structure in plain language, pointed out a few things worth cleaning up, and helped me make changes without breaking what already worked. For a small business owner who wears the “tech person” hat by default, that alone was worth it.

It helped me design my website

The site you’re reading this on started as a conversation. I described what my business does and who it’s for, and Claude helped me shape the layout, the wording, and the overall feel, then generate the actual pages. When I wanted to reorganize things or add a page, I just asked, and we iterated until it felt like mine.

It didn’t replace my judgment about what I wanted. It removed the blank-page paralysis and the hours of fiddling that usually come with it.

It made the visuals and graphics

Design assets are one of those things small businesses either overspend on or skip entirely. I’ve used Claude to create images and graphics that fit my brand, which meant I could keep a consistent look without a designer on retainer for every small piece.

It drafted contracts and documents

This one saved me real time. I’ve used Claude to draft client-facing documents and contract templates, starting points I could tailor instead of writing from scratch or paying for every version.

A caveat I’ll be honest about, because it matters: for anything with legal weight, I treat the AI’s draft as a first draft, not a final one. For important contracts, having a professional review them is money well spent. AI gets you 80% of the way there quickly; the last 20% still deserves human eyes.

It built the spreadsheets that keep me organized

Finances are where a lot of small businesses quietly lose track. I’ve used Claude to build Excel templates for tracking income, expenses, and the numbers I actually need to watch, with the formulas already set up so I’m not fighting the spreadsheet. Having a system that fits how my business works, rather than forcing my business into someone else’s template, made staying on top of the money far less painful.

And a lot of “small” things that add up

Beyond the big projects, it’s the everyday stuff: rewording an awkward email, thinking through a decision out loud, summarizing something long, turning a messy idea into a clear plan. None of it is dramatic on its own. Together, it’s like having a capable, patient assistant available whenever I need one.

Why this matters for small businesses

Here’s my honest takeaway. As a small business, your real constraint is usually you.  Your time and your attention, stretched across jobs that would be four different roles at a bigger company. What made Claude valuable wasn’t any single feature. It was that one tool could flex across so many of those roles: part developer, part designer, part assistant, part analyst.

It’s not magic, and it doesn’t replace expertise. You still have to know what you want, review what it gives you, and bring your own judgment. But used that way, it gives a small business a genuine amount of leverage for very little cost, and that’s exactly the kind of practical advantage I care about.

That’s why I’ll keep testing tools like this and sharing what I find. If you’re a small business owner wondering where AI could actually help you, not in theory, but in your day-to-day,  that’s the whole reason Madison Web and AI exists. If you’d like to talk it through, reach out for a free consultation. No pressure, no jargon.

More tool tests coming soon.
